The holiday season can be a rush of excitement and festivities, but for many it can also bring stress or fear about the foods that come along with it. From gatherings to office boxes of chocolate, there is often an abundance of rich, sweet, tasty eats all around.
Before you swear off all the holiday treats in an effort to stick to your health plan, consider this; can you enjoy the delicious foods of the season while still feeling great? Yes, and it starts with being realistic and kind to yourself.
Rather than fixating on what not to eat, consider planning to enjoy some holiday treats while continuing to fuel your body with foods that help you feel your best. This moves you from an all or nothing mindset to one that makes space for all foods. Let’s break it down.
1) Eat those meals – skipping meals to “save room” for the big dinner can lead to overindulging later, leaving you feeling sluggish. Eat regular meals/ snacks throughout the day to keep your energy steady and prevent starvation whiplash.
2) Protein and fibre, anyone? – craving a cookie as an afternoon snack? Awesome. But is one really enough to fill you up? Doubtful. Have your cookie (or two) alongside a handful of nuts and a piece of fruit. 🍪🍓
3) Be real – are you really going to be happy eating zero treats at the family gathering? Better yet, is that a fair expectation? Give yourself permission to eat the treat, and enjoy it. I promise it will taste better if you’re not already giving yourself the third degree from the minute you take a bite.
Savour the moments – It’s not about perfection, it’s about enjoying your time without guilt and being present with those around you. A cookie or three can fit right into a healthy, balanced day.
Here’s to a holiday season filled with connection and joy, not stressing over every bite. You’ve got this! 🎄✨
With love, Jill
